Some of us we have fear of disapproval from others. We are so afraid of being rejection. In all our life we re thinking about what other people will think about us.
Most of the time we know what right things to do. But we will not do it since worrying about what others will think. We are always afraid to express them. Sometimes we are afraid to say 'NO'. We are tired of being manipulated and used. We are just collection of expectation of others.
So we are not living a life what God wants to be. we are missing God's gift, the purpose the God gave to us.
Proverb 29:25 says "Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe."
The approval from others is not bad thing, that is the legitimate need in our life. Nothing wrong to please Parents, wife and husband.
In fact the Bible tell us to please other people.
But good things provided by God in our life can be misused sometime because of people pleasing.
Lets see briefly why trying to please people everyone is a trap?
1. It causes us to miss God's purpose for our life
It creates the peer pressure. It leads miss the things what God wants to be.
2.It complicates our relationship with god and keeps from growing faith.
John 5:44 says "How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only god."
3.It leads us to do sin.
Exodus 23:2 says "Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong"
sample story: Pilot story, Saul Story- God wants eliminate all idolatry. But because of people Saul accept it(1 Samuel 15:24)
4.It causes Hypocrisy in our life.
Luke 16:15 says "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your heart"
Now Lets see the ways for free from this People Pleasing.
1. You cant please everyone.
Make sure that we cant do this. If everybody likes you, It means you have no conviction and you have no believe.
2. we don't need anyone's approval to be happy.
Isaiah 51:12 and Psalm 27:10
3. what seems so important is only temporary.
1 John 2:17 says "The world and its distances pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever."
4. we only have to please one Person.
i.e., Our Creator, Our Savior,
we only need one persons approval i.e, Gods approval
People pleasing is the form of idolatry. If we give more important than God that becomes an idol.
John 5:41
If we please God it doesn't matter whom we displease. If we displease God it doesn't matter who we please.
Summary:
Galatians 1:10 says "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings or God? or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."
So people pleasures don't make God servants of Christ because people pleasures cave under pressure from influential people, they ignore harmful hypocrisy, and run from the shame of the cross.
More than that the people pleasures live anxious life, always worrying about where they will find approval or disapproval from others.
The only real freedom for people pleasures comes from understanding and experiencing security in our relationship with God and who we are in Christ.
